Universities and Colleges

Once students graduate from high school and are ready to continue their education in a more collegiate setting, they have the option of attending The University of Alabama, Stillman College, or Shelton State Community College.

The University of Alabama (UA) is proudly located in Tuscaloosa and is one of the country's oldest public universities, first opening its doors in 1831. UA is an entirely popular choice for students to fulfill their higher academic goals as the university has been recognized as the top university in the state, offering bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and Education Specialist degrees in 13 academic divisions.

Also located in Tuscaloosa is Stillman College, a private, historically black liberal arts college. Stillman College opened its doors in 1876. Originally named Tuscaloosa Institute under the auspices of Reverend Dr. Charles Allen Stillman, Reverend Stillman's vision was to open an institute "for the training of colored men for the ministry." Today, Stillman College offers bachelor's degrees in over a dozen academic divisions.

A two-year college, Shelton State Community College is where most students first attend to take care of their general education requirements before transferring to the four-year university or state college of their choice. The college has two campuses, one off of Alabama Highway 69 in Taylorville and the other in the western region of the city. The Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame is located at the college.

Local Economy

Considered one of the "50 Best Places to Launch a Small Business" by Fortune Small Business in November 2009, small and large businesses thrive alongside some of the city's mom-and-pop shops and lifestyle shopping centers. It also helps that the area has a pretty diversified economy with residents working in manufacturing and services, education, retail trade, construction, and in the federal, state and local government sectors.

Several big name companies and manufacturers have plants, factories and regional offices in the city or county of Tuscaloosa with one of the largest in the area being the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International assembly plant. Tuscaloosa has quite an impressive list of major employers in the area, including BF Goodrich Tire Manufacturing, Nucor Steel, Bryce Hospital, The University of Alabama, the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, and Hunt Refining Company, among others.
